My beloved Canon Eos Rebel XSi seems to be broken.

The auto-focus just doesn't work anymore. Manual shooting works sporadically.

When I'm on an auto setting, pressing the shutter button does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. The little red focus dot doesn't show up, the lens don't whirr as they move to focus the image, NOTHINGGG. Manual shooting works here and there.

I've checked to see that I've attached the lens correctly, that the physical switch points to "AF" and that the memory card is snuggly fitted into its slot.

Plus the warranty ran out, and my mom is leaning towards purchasing a new body (also Canon make) instead of sending it to the fixshop.

I'm going to have to peer through the intertubes in search for an answer, but if you have any suggestions, throw them my way.
